On Saturday I went to see the Kerry James Marshall Exhibit at the Jack Shainman Gallery. It was absolutely amazing seeing it up close and actually quite overwhelming. It was just me in the gallery and I was in total silence so it actually felt a lil scary. There was this one piece which was a painting of an artist and I had seen it in a smaller print but up close it was huge, this big man towered over me looking me dead in the eyes. He was so there, in your face, because he paints everything so black and so bold it is just soo impactful, you cannot hide, there is no getting away from it.
It is beautiful looking at his work, almost like he has drawn it on Black paper rather than white and because he uses the white ontop of the black it makes everything stand out even more. The guys eyes in the photo really stood out as they were a lighter brown and he was following me everywhere. I was such a geek I started talking to the painting I was like "can’t you just smile a little." His sternness was killing me he was just looking me straight in the eye with an expression that I couldn’t quite work out.
The love/black romantic collection was the best though (well for me personally). They made me so happy to see as I have a book of this collection. They screamed freedom and pride and it was just a smidgin of cuteness. Daniel says my favourite word in the world is “cute” as my inarticulate self describes soo many things as cute and likes art to be just a lil "cute." It’s such an in apt word but such a good one. There is nothing wrong with cute lol.
